Overview

Located in the city of Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Rocks Beach is a two-and-seven-tenths-of-a-mile-long beach with white sand.  The city of Indian Rocks Beach was listed as one of the “Favorite Long-Weekend Destinations Of 2023” by the Southern Living magazine.

Amenities

Although Indian Rocks Beach does not have lifeguards, the beach and the area near it have many other amenities including restrooms, grassy recreational areas, drinking fountains, benches, boardwalks, picnic areas, and nearby watersports equipment rental facilities.   

Dogs are not allowed at Indian Rocks Beach.

Activities

Indian Rocks Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, swimming, fishing, surfing, boogie boarding, bodysurfing, skimboarding, paddleboarding, kitesurfing, windsurfing, boating, water-skiing, snorkeling, jet-skiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife watching, and surf-skiing. 

This beach is ideal for less-experienced swimmers because the water here usually has gentle waves.  In addition, it is also popular with surfers because the water here is known to have fun and consistent surfing waves.  You can see the Indian Rocks Beach live cam to check the amazing waves here. 

If you are planning to swim, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard here, we recommend being careful because the water here can have unpredictable rip currents and dangerous waves.  In addition, the water here is also known to occasionally have a form of algae named red tide, which can be harmful for humans.  

This beach is ideal for visitors looking for a quieter beach experience because it sees fewer visitors as compared to other nearby Pinellas County beaches.  If you like taking pictures with excellent views, Indian Rocks Beach offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Pinellas County shoreline, especially during sunset.  This beach hosts many fun events including yoga classes, races, and skim board events in addition, the city of Indian Rocks Beach also hosts the annual Oktoberfest.

Disability Access

Indian Rocks Beach has a wheelchair-friendly mobility mat for visitors with disabilities, along with multiple disabled-friendly boardwalks in addition, there are multiple local private organizations that offer beach wheelchair rental facilities.  These organizations include St. Petersburg Mobility Scooters and Green Iguana Rentals.

Parking

Getting to Indian Rocks Beach is easy the main entrance for this beach is located near 1700 Gulf Boulevard.  There is a paid parking lot near this entrance and this lot charges $2.50 per hour.  In addition to this main entrance, there are approximately 20 additional public entrances for this beach along Gulf Boulevard most of these entrances have nearby free parking lots.

Fun Fact

This beach and the city reportedly received their name Indian Rocks Beach because there was earlier a rock-encircled sulphur spring here.  This spring was frequently used by local Native Americans to cure diseases.  The European settlers noticed this phenomenon of “Indians” going to the “rocks” and eventually named this coastal area “Indian Rocks Beach.”

Attractions

There are many attractions near Indian Rocks Beach.  Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve has a boardwalk that passes through mangroves this preserve has many amenities including restrooms and drinking fountains and it also has interpretive signs on local biodiversity.  Splash Harbor Water Park is a water park that has a variety of amazing rides and it also has an arcade, a mini-golf area, and cabana rental facilities.  George C. McGough Nature Park offers many amenities including a nature center, picnic areas, a butterfly garden, an observation area, a restroom, a boardwalk, a playground, canoe launch area, walking trails, and fire pits this nature park has a rich biodiversity and it also has mangroves and oak hammock forests.  In addition, it also has exhibits displaying live animals.  Indian Rocks Historical Museum is a museum that offers many interesting exhibitions on local history.  If you are looking for another attraction near the beach, Pinellas County Heritage Village offers interesting exhibitions on the history of Pinellas County this museum also offers a gift shop and it also hosts interesting educational events.

Restaurants

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants and Indian Rocks Beach bars near this beach.  Guppy’s on the Beach Restaurant also known as Guppy's Restaurant in Indian Rocks Beach is known for serving amazing dishes for lunch and dinner including seafood, salads, poultry dishes, steaks, pastas, and burgers.  Salt Rock Grill is an upscale restaurant that is known for serving amazing seafood and steaks and it also offers meatloaf, pastas, sandwiches, and burgers.  The Original Crabby Bill’s offers amazing dishes for lunch and dinner including seafood, Southern-style dishes, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, and steak this restaurant also offers live music events.  PJ’s Oyster Bar offers many outstanding dishes including seafood, steaks, pastas, baby back ribs, and chicken.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, Jake’s Coastal Cantina is known for serving excellent Mexican dishes including burritos, tacos, quesadillas, tamales, and chile rellenos.

If you are looking for a hotel near the beach, there are many great nearby Indian Rocks Beach hotels.  The 4-Star Opal Sands Resort offers many amenities including a gym, a spa, a restaurant, two bars, a sundeck, bike loaner facilities, a guest computer, and a pool.  The 4-Star Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites on Sand Key is another upscale hotel that offers many amenities including a fitness center, a spa, multiple restaurants, a pool, a hot tub, a convenience store, a gift shop, and boat rental facilities.  Another upscale hotel is the 4-Star Sheraton Sand Key Resort that offers many amenities including multiple restaurants, a bar, a convenience store, a gift shop, a boat rental facilities, a fitness center, a hot tub, and a pool.  A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Belleair Beach Resort Motel that offers many amenities including a sundeck, a pool, vending machines, picnic areas, a patio, barbecue areas, and a shuffleboard court.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby hotel, the 3-Star Holiday Inn & Suites Clearwater Beach S-Harbourside, an IHG Hotel also unofficially called Holiday Inn Indian Rocks Beach offers many amenities including a mini-golf, a fitness center, a pool with a waterfall, a hot tub, multiple bars, a gift shop, a game room, a marina, and barbecue areas.
